It may look highly unusual but if you are serious into songwriting you must face the challenge of reading and writing with sheet music. Creativity seems to be the most important aspect in the songwriting process. And with this creativity paired with extensive knowledge of sheet music makes you even a powerful songwriter. Why?

Sample sheet music below:

It is because sheet music makes your songs even easy to remember and to use. Think what happens if someone likes to use your song for some artist or even in a film music score, they will be most likely looking for a sheet music. Thus, it offers several advantage if you can write with sheet music.

I remember one songwriter who is both creative and learns how to read/write with sheet music. He writes and sings Christian songs, believe it or not, he knows every single note of his completed masterpiece. I mean, the vocals, the violin, guitar, bass, etc. Then he launches a very big concert for a cause project. It was a huge financial success, a lot of performers and musicians came to sing his works and attended by thousands of eager concert viewers. I have seen them during practice and rehearsals, they are using sheet music done by him. It makes the practice and rehearsals very easy, and I think it would be very hard to render those pieces in live performance without the sheet music.

So how to start writing and reading sheet music effectively? There is no quick way except to start reading and writing it the very slow and very basic way. I recommend you to read my free music lessons. Start with those pages in this website navigation menu where you can find important pieces of information that will help you learn to write and read sheet music:

Music Theory Scales
Sharp # major scale
Sharp # minor scale
Flat major scale
Flat minor scale

It is highly advantageous to learn the basic first, start with playing with instruments such as piano or guitar. You do not really need an expensive music lessons in these instruments except if you plan to become a virtuoso in guitar or piano.

Today a lot of computer tools emerge as a result of technological advancements in music. The friend I mentioned above who can write and read sheet music uses some piece of software like Finale to generate the sheet music. Again, as a suggestion, better learn the basic first before purchasing these pieces of software. In the internet, you can find a lot of useful information to find free sheet music, lessons and articles for several instruments/genres. One of the excellent free sheet music site I found is: http://www.freesheetmusic.net.

Once you are confident when reading and practicing sheet music from your favorite and popular piece. You can start doing your own. This is where I recommend to use a sheet music software for faster editing , high quality printed output, automatic audio output (from your ongoing written piece) and overall flexibility. This eliminates paper work and the hassles of editing and saves time in the entire songwriting or music production process.

One of the greatest advantage I have seen with modern sheet music software is that it gives you the ability to write and add background instrumental arrangements. So it is not only vocals which your song will be primarily focused on. But you can write vocal tracks, guitar tracks , bass, drums all in one. The resulting piece is a fully produced track ready for other applications.

Also speaking about song and recording copyright applications, if you use sheet music software like Finale, you can easily print music sheets at the same time export a completed mp3 tracks. This makes copyright application very easy since it requires music sheets (highly recommended for song copyright application, since it contains both the melodies and lyrics) and mp3 tracks (which you can get also from sheet music software).

Currently this piece of software is a bit affordable, you can buy one for $50 dollars. You can read some information here: http://www.finalemusic.com/songwriter/

Constant correct practice is essential, if you are armed with the basics and you have a songwriting schedule. Since sheet music software provides you more flexibility that any other tools, it will utilize your creativity to the fullest which you can have more chances of writing hits. Using sheet music makes you even a more effective and productive songwriter.

There are certain things that separates pro and amateur writers. One thing you should immediately noticed:

a. Pro-songwriters songs are performed in wide variety audience, while amateur writers songs are only listened by family members.
b. Pro-writers songs captivates the community because of its mass public appeal. Amateur writers songs are limited only to herself/himself.
c. Professional songwriters songs conveys a meaningful story to its listeners (theme). Amateur writer songs lyrics are confusing to understand.
d. Great writers of songs can be played in stadiums with people heavily jamming around it. Amateur songs can be boring to listen and can only be played inside the bedroom.

Enough of the comparison, you can immediately noticed that the main lessons we can learn from PRO songwriters is that they write “BIG” songs.

In a biblical battle between David and Goliath, David won. This is not the case with music business, “BIG” songs should always won. They are the ones get noticed, played in radio, stadiums and everywhere while “SMALL” songs written by amateur writers are only played in his/her bedroom, so sad.

How to make your song BIG?

1. Write great lyrics that have clear story.

“Clear story” means it can be understood by any type of listeners. If you cannot write great lyrics. Consider doing some songwriting collaboration work. It should have a theme, which is very useful in classifying your songs in licensing work. Some music consumers or artist are looking for songs with theme about friends, love, work ,etc. It is important to have a theme.

2. Learn to write for mass appeal.

Remember that if you need to write BIG songs, then it should be liked by as many people as possible. This will make your song eligible to be played in stadiums where variety of people are group together , for example in a festival. Writing for mass appeal needs lyrics that can easily relate to people’s lives not yourself. Example of this are songs about problems in the communities like drug addiction.

3. Speed up the tempo of your songs

If you need it to be big and be played in big concert venues, it needs to be up-tempo. No one likes to listen to a slow song in such as crowded audience. They get bored.

4. Strong HOOKs

Do you want them to sing with you? Write great hooks, it is why in every U2 concerts I have seen , people are singing along with Bono for a song like “In the name of love”,written with unforgettable song hooks.Do the same with your songs. Think big and write big, this will make your song stands out in front of million listeners.

It is true that music listeners get to used listening common chord patterns. There is also a high correlation of hit songs using common chord patterns. Therefore it is essential that in your songwriting process, you should use common chord patterns if you need to create melodies that are appealing to listeners.

The problem is if you do not know what is common chord patterns. It depends if you are using major and minor key signatures.

The following are common major key signature chord patterns:

A -major:

A-E-F#m-D
A-D-A-D
A-E-D-A
A-F#m-D-E
A-G-A-G
A-C-D-E
A-Bm-D-E
A-C#m-D-E

C-major

C-F-G-C
C-G-Am-F
C-Dm-F-G
C-Em-Am-F
C-Am-F-G
C-G-Em-F

D-major
D-A-G-A
D-D/F#-G-A
D-D/F#-Em-D
D-Em-A-G
D-Em-G-A
D-Bm-G-A
D-A-Bm-G

E-major
E-A-D-E
E-A-B-A

F-major
F-Dm-C
F-Em-Am-Dm-C
F-C-Dm-Bb

G-major
G-D-C-D
G-Em-C-D
G-C-D-C
G-C-G-C
G-Bm-C-D
G-Am-Bm-C-D

Songs starting with minor key signatures are also common though not as common with major keys. Most up tempo songs are well suited to a major type scale.

Common Minor keys

Am-F-C-G
Am-Em-D-G
Am-C-Em-G
Bm-D-A-E
Em-C-G-D
Em-Am-G-D
Dm-C-G
F#m-D-A-E

This is not a complete list but I am sure all those important patterns are being covered. I suggest that if you play guitar, try strumming those chords then sing randomly created melodies, you will be amazed that you can easily create great melodies using those patterns more than any other patterns available.

If you are songwriter you maybe asking how strong are the songs written? Knowing this information is extremely very useful in your marketing efforts as it will help you pitch the proper songs to your potential clients. Not knowing this information, you cannot get full potential returns of your songs.

For example, say you have written 20 songs. But most clients will ask for only the top 3 songs to be sent to them, so it is up to you to decide which are the strongest songs. Do you know the potential of your songs very well??? If do not know your songs well, do not even bother submitting top 3 songs or else you maybe wasting a lot of money in the submission process.

This is also applicable in any scenarios, it could be a songwriting contest or a music publisher accepting demos. So make sure those songs that are sent are the strongest ones. Are we confident that as a songwriter we can spot great songs? Maybe yes or no. We all have our personal choices, great writers such as John Lennon loves songs he wrote but it is not even known to public like the ones popular such as “Imagine”.

Great songs are hit potentials. Even songwriters may not even aware of the true song potential. “Hey Jude” by Beatles was written in a car while Paul McCartney was driving to visit John Lennon home. Paul did not give it much attention, until he played it live in a piano then George Martin then produces the song. The result is a Gold record:

To avoid songwriter self- bias and to clearly spot the strong ones, below are the ways that are recommended to spot the true strong songs. A truly great song pass in all test below. It is up to you to use all inputs in the process below.

1st approach: Simple, have someone hear your song, particularly not your relatives but your peers. A good recording is recommended but you can play it a guitar or piano just like how Paul McCartney introduces “Hey Jude”. Truth will come, and they will frankly tell you that your song is not good enough or has potential. Pay close attention to details and handle rejection carefully. This is where professionalism in songwriting is very important. I read how Billy Joel wrote “Honesty”, it was when he was sitting in a piano with a friend. He ask for his friend feedback about the new song he wrote. Then his friend criticizes the song ,saying it sucks. Instead of becoming angry or being discourage, Billy Joel sits down in the piano for a longer time developing the song. It ended up a masterpiece, it was a song called “Honesty”.

2nd approach. Spread out your lyrics to your friends and ask for feedback. You can even publish it on your blog and let viewers comment your lyrics. Again truth comes, when readers does not understand the lyrics, it will then mean you have problems with your lyrics and most likely the song cannot convey good message to listeners. A creative idea is to start a blog about your lyrics. Participate in songwriting forums. Below are the recommended songwriting forums for which you can join for free:

a. http://forums.songstuff.com/
b. http://www.musesmuse.com/forums/index.php
c. http://www.songwriterforums.com/forums/

3rd approach. Have your songs professionally reviewed. This is a cool approach. By having someone review your songs professionally you can get valuable inputs to measure if your songs are strong or not. I think there are great song review sites out there. I have searched Google and I have find these: http://www.unsignedbandweb.com/forum13.html

If you need a more professional song reviews, you can join Broadjam. They have free song reviews for any types of membership. I am not still a paid member though planning soon. But I find their song review services really helpful.

4th approach. Try hit song science: http://www.hitsongscience.com/. It can help you measure quantitatively the hit song potential of your songs. This is very reliable tool especially when paired with subjective reviews from forums in the 1st to 3rd approach above. If you received some very good subjective reviews on the above 1st to 3rd approach then hit song science gives you a hit song rating. Most likely the song will become successful.

5th approach. Join Indie Song Music Charting and let the public decides the rest. Before record-producer.com accepts demo songs. But currently they have disabled it (as of November 2008) due to the volume of submissions. But as the time of writing this article, my song “Always thinking of you” manages to stay on Position 1 on their chart for almost 3 months now. See screen shot below:

If you can give it a visit, you a listen it here: Always thinking of you-Jeanine Maningo

I received a lot of request and feedback on this topic about writing the hook of the song . Writing hooks is extremely important to any songwriter because it defines the success of the song. As discussed many times on this blog, “Hook” is the most memorable and touching part of the song. Whether it is a rock, pop or country song, it needs strong hooks to be marketable, remembered and increase chances of selling the song. Hook is found in the song chorus stage and it is highly recommended to put this one on the chorus because it will be repeated and increase chances of being remembered or emphasized.

There are basically two approaches when writing the song hook. The first one is writing the hook first. For example when I write a song, I start with a hook which is defined by at most 12 notes of common chord sequence found in rock, pop and country songs. Yes that’s it, once you are purely confident that those notes are indeed great and captivating. I start writing the rest of the song structure, such as the stanza or bridge.

Most hooks of the song consist of even less than 12 notes, great/legendary songs such as “All you need is love” by the Beatles consist of only: 5 notes, All-you-need-is-love. Or longer notes (around 12 notes) is “Because you love me” by Celine Dion, I’m- eve-ry-thing- I- am-be-cause- you- loved-me.

The advantage of this one, is that you do not have to worry other things such as the stanza or bridge, once you have a strong foundation (hook), the song is already 80% marketable! If you remember the Pareto Principle, the hook of the song is only 20% of the parts, but it is responsible for around 80% of the results.

The rule is simple, give more time to it. Writing hook is often difficult and boring process, but if you like to challenge yourself, consider that patience and love of songwriting is the key to success for this. Paul McCartney has around 20 number 1 songs, but he has written more than 500 songs. So it is only 4%! If you are getting tired in writing and does not have the guts to consistently write, then this is not a good career for you.

A common misconception of any other songwriters, you do not really need an instrument to write the hook. In fact you can even write by humming the beat or even using your imagination. Then once you have hum the song and you remember it well, translate to notes and chords so that you can play it along with your favorite or preferred musical instruments. But in my experience, I find writing combination of humming, playing with instruments and good vocals produces a powerful hook. In critical songwriting moment, I even need help from a professional singer to actually sing the hook, so that I can think at the earliest moment what the song would sound if it will recorded in a professional way. In this type of approach, you can immediately sort out good songs from bad songs.

What about the lyrics? Frankly the lyrics, does play the success of the hook. It should relate to something important, memorable human event and realistic event. No one likes to shout or sing the hook of the song if that particular lyrics that does not make sense at all. In this case, you need good lyrics. If you are not comfortable in writing good lyrics or having problems with it. Consider finding a good lyricist for you to partner in songwriting collaboration efforts. This should produce a very successful result. Great example of songwriting partners ( Musician and Lyricist) are Bernie Taupin and Elton John.

The 2nd approach when writing the hook of the song is to start from Intro- Stanza- then focusing on a great chorus- Bridge. This works so well if you are very familiar with music and playing with instruments. This is an easier approach overall compared to the 1st one, but you will have a hard time writing the hook. The reason is that the hook most follows a complete different chord sequence from the 1st and 2nd stanza. You need some time and creativity to pull out a great hook from the 1st set of stanza melodies.

In fact I have made a video tutorial long time ago before this website was created about writing the hook of the song, using the 2nd approach. In the video, you can observe that I start with the stanza, then I hum the chorus melodies. Yes, I start with the melodies first. After that, I put some meaningful lyrics that relates to the theme of the song. To fully test that it works well, I ask for help from a great female singer (mmm… my Jeanine holding those cameras.) to sing the chorus. And it sounds great. I recorded it to a cassette tape to have a documentation. Although the video itself records the first creation of the melody.

After so many days, I still do not forget the chorus. It was so catchy for me, and I am glad this is a good hook. Good luck in your songwriting!

Ok, I have written down this quality songwriting tips that any songwriter should not forget. There are certain songs that sounds exceptionally well but most of the songs sound crapped and unmarketable. Basically it is in my belief that regardless your status as songwriter, whether you are an amateur or a professional one. The word “Quality” should be kept into focus. Let me tell you a simple story of how “quality” is being measured by the Beatles Paul McCartney and John Lennon, we all know they have written hits more than anyone in this planet up to this time.

I have been reading the biography of these great songwriters especially John Lennon and Paul McCartney. “Quality” is important for them even though they are not considered as “professionals” before they become famous. What they define as a “quality” song is something that can be remembered the next day or in the coming days without the use of a recorder. Remember that these guys are busy, unfocused, always doing things informally that will increase chances of forgetting the tunes. In the next day, they will tend to forget most of the tune they have created days before.

But these great writers are not worried forgetting those tunes at all, instead they feel happy they sorted out “BAD” songs. What they can remember the next or coming days is really a great song. Then that is the time they have to spend more time developing it. Things like playing it in the band, testing the arrangement and coordinating with their producers George Martin are the things they will do to further improve the songs.

Most of the time they will remember the “HOOK” of the song, which is the most memorable part of any piece. Beatles are legends in creating hooks, this is partly to their techniques in sorting out “BAD” to “GREAT” songs. Number 1 Hits like “Yellow Submarine”, “Yesterday” and “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” are all sorted using these techniques.

Paul McCartney noted the differences between “liking” the song, and “loving” the song. We all know that if there is something we like, we tend to forget soon. This is different to something we love, we are obsessed with it. It is true when he wrote “Yesterday”, at first it is said he meet the tune in his dream. Then after he woke up, he record the song in his cassette. He keep playing the song day by day by himself, even with different lyrics. But the tune is the same, it was memorable to him and feel in love with his song.

The lesson I learned is that you need to LOVE YOUR SONG. It is the same as loving yourself first before you need somebody to love you. Loving your song means you will do what it takes to make the song a hit and popular. This is one of the effective tips.

My father told me that the Beatles never stop writing songs even they are riding on a bus to the concert. It says that to provide a good number of hits you must wrote a lot of songs. Great songwriters like the Beatles admits that there are “GOOD” and “BAD” songs. They weed out the bad songs by writing as many songs as possible, so that the “Gems” will shine through their catalog. It is hard to select quality songs if you have written a few. You need to write many so that the chances of having great songs will become higher also. Please read this post I have written about how to come up with some good songs in your demo catalog. This is a good start in how to use your math to come up with some realistic expectations of having good songs in your demo.

In fact what is the most transparent effective songwriting technique by the Beatles is the power of songwriter collaboration. John Lennon and Paul McCartney are the greatest songwriting partners of all time. The reason why this technique works is simple: “Two Heads are more powerful and creative than One”. I have tried this myself, where I wrote some songs and it is not as powerful as those produced with a collaborator. This is because when you write a song with a partner, the partner can criticize and can even improve the melodies of the song. Same technique employed by the Beatles, when John Lennon starts up the song, Paul McCartney can even make the song better, or vice versa. This is highly advantageous if both of you are extremely good. Two great songwriters working together can even write a more powerful piece than doing solo.

Learn from these legends in songwriting, observed like conversing with them as what the quotation says:

A single conversation with a wise man is better than ten years of study. ~Chinese Proverb

Song reviews are ways to get others critique the song for improvements. Songwriters are afraid of this, they always like their songs to get praised. It is not actually the reality, in fact the only way to improve a song is to get song reviews. But most of the songwriters think that anyone can review the song, so they asked helped from their sister, girlfriend, boyfriend or other close relatives to review the song. This is not advisable because by psychology they will not tell the truth. A dishonest song review is good as nothing. Songwriters need to hear detailed and honest reviews from anonymous persons or music professionals.

Song is a product of the songwriter, just like any products being commercially released in the market such as a “CD Single” where it features a single song. It needs to be thoroughly reviewed before it will be released. All products needs a review to be accepted or to improve further. The review will reveal the weakness and strengths of any product, this includes songs.

Assessing the potential of the song is extremely important thing to do. Big music publishing companies rely on critiques and assessments of the songs to decide which songs to pitch to the recording labels or other music consumers. There are several ways to do this:

a. A Paid Song Review service.
b. A Free Song Assessment service.

We lived in a world of business so do not expect always that everything is free, in fact these review services could be very valuable to any songwriter. Below are what I found in the internet to offer Paid and Free Song Review Services, I will comment based on my knowledge on those services. Take note, I am not promoting or endorsing these services but just gives you an honest idea of what to expect by availing this free and paid services.

Paid Song Review Service:

a. Taxi – The most popular of all is Taxi. What you can get with Taxi is that when you sign up as a member at a cost of $299.95 for one year, is a free song critique. You can only received these useful song comments when you submit songs for their music industry listings. These song critiques will be very useful to improve the songs. Take note you are hearing constructive comments from professionals. I am not still a Taxi member as of this moment. But I am planning to be, it is expensive for me at this moment. So far as I have read in music forums, I hear both positive and negative comments about Taxi. It is natural that every music establishments cannot be perfect nor we can expect everybody to praise. There are several success stories I heard about Taxi after submitting songs in their listing and receiving song critiques. This is a good sign that you can get something from their service. And if you need professional comments or song reviews, this is good if you have the bucks.Read for more information regarding Taxi Song Critiques.

Free Song Review Service:

I know two free song review services and they are very useful. Keep in mind that in a free song review services the principle of “give” and “take” applies. This means that in order for you to received song reviews, credits or some trust in the service, you must review other songs as well. In this way you are not only there to get help but to offer also constructive/positive comments on other songwriter songs. It is a fact that if you are not the songwriter of the song, you can critique the song very well. The reason is that you put yourself in a shoes of a listener or ordinary music consumers. This enable any person who loves music to critique the song honestly. Any wise songwriter can use this valuable inputs to improve songs. Personally, I really love receiving and doing song reviews. As a songwriter, I love to hear what others say about my song in an honest way. At the same time as a recording producer, I can get feed backs to how others view my recordings. I need to know if it sounds professional or not. Therefore receiving reviews is very useful to any serious musician. The two below are the ones I currently used and again I am not endorsing any services here.

a. Songwriter Forum Community Message Board – This is a nice place for songwriters and it is free. All you need to do is to register yourself in the forums and you can ask for a review under “Reviews & Recommendations” section. But do not ask always for reviews, there are also other songwriters in need of reviews so listen to their tracks and offer some useful comments also. They will be very glad and thankful for your review. Just read the forum guidelines first before continuing further. The great thing about this forum is that unlike in Taxi, you can discuss the comments and reviews along with the other song reviewers/other songwriters. In this way, you can ask for a more detailed reasons why he/she made such point which help you understand better the information contained in the reviews.

b. www.broadjam.com song review service – This is the place that I started doing music seriously. It was 2004 and I do not know about song reviews very well and my songs sound pretty crap until I met Broadjam. The good thing with Broadjam is a wide community of artist, musicians, producers and any other music industry professionals all packed in one big site ready to help you. If you need more services from Broadjam, you can sign up with fee, the cost is reasonable but I am just a mini-mob member (free version) and planning to upgrade soon! I am already a fan of Broadjam for 4 years and I believe they have great services for any aspiring artist/songwriter. To receive song reviews, is to review other songs first. Read their review guidelines and I am hoping things are still the same and they won’t be switching to paid song reviews or else a lot of starter songwriters/musicians will be affected. Before you can review songs, you can sign up as an Artist, upload a maximum of 3 songs and start listening/ reviewing other artist songs. Their chart is powered by song reviews and rating system is quantitative/detailed which is good if you need to evaluate the full potential of your song.

Music nowadays is very competitive. Some issues such as cutting royalty rates, increasing recording cost and rampant music piracy hurts songwriting income and the entire music publishing business. Before, songwriter used to be just creating songs, will look for publisher and recording label will be asking songs from publisher to record.

Now things are very different, with more and more competition, music industry demands completed products almost right away from a songwriter or unsigned artist. And these completed products needs to be in extreme high quality compared to compete the increasing demos being submitted. The term “demo” does not anymore apply to a rough recording, it needs to be “excellent”.

Based on my experience, below are the proven tips you can become a competitive songwriter:

1. Learn to master a single genre which you are really good at.

A misleading tips is to master the most profitable and high demand genre: THIS IS WRONG! After all you end up competing with billions of songwriters out there such as in pop and rock genre. Of course, when you believe you can be the best POP songwriter then go on. Other genres are not highly in demand but there are only few competitors. Say, jazz…there are only very few jazz songwriters, but if you are extremely good at this then you will really be successful.

2. Let others seriously criticize your song

The best song reviewers are the ones that do not know you. So if you can do this , you can obtain a lot of information about your song which can be used to improve the quality of your catalog.

3. Write lyrics to touch people’s lives

A well written lyrics aim at people can have meanings in them. This will make your song useful and meaningful. As a result, it will make your song remembered and can give you fortune for the rest of your lives.

4. Melody is still extremely important particularly the hook

I love songs with great melodies. Melody is a great factor in writing hit songs. Hook is the most memorable part of the song. To test how good is the hook, is very simple. I follow Beatles writing guide: “If we wrote the melodies of the song, we hum it using a guitar but we are still not recording it in any way. The next day, we will hum it again without even using a guitar, if we are able to remember it…the melody is great and memorable, if not it is a crap and we should not regret forgetting it”.

5. Think of Recording Quality as the Image of Yourself

We will not like having a bad image/appearance in front of people we need to impress, it is the same with recording quality of your songs. A well written and catchy song is not enough, you need to have excellent recording quality. It is like beautiful people will not all become super models unless they have to make their image marketable.

6. Treat music “SERIOUSLY” as a business

Competitive songwriter thinks of his songs as product, the way any entrepreneur or business does. To do this seriously, consider copyrighting all your work in US Copyright office. Then be affiliated with most songwriter associations. Learn music publishing with heart.

7. An IronClad in the midst of Rejections

This is the most useful advice, you will be spending years in rejection and looking opportunities before you could earn a good songwriting income. Trust me, you cannot be successful in this business if you do not have the ironclad in your self. Famous songwriters such as Diane Warren (”I don’t wanna miss a thing” by Aerosmith and “Because you love me” by Celine Dion) spent years in rejection before being successful.

8. Work hard and have a music goal for yourself

A million miles journey must begin with a single step! This is true if you need to become competitive. Make sure you have a plan for your music. Make your plan simple and formulate strategies such as:

5 year Goal: To fully establish a 50 song catalog, and completed all needed documentation such as copyright registration certificates, websites, licenses and audio sample recordings.
Strategies: (How will you able to achieve your Goal):

Strategies:
1st: Write 2 songs per month
2nd: Complete 50 songs in two years.
3rd: Record audio samples for 50 songs in one year
4th: File copyright for your sound recording and songs.
5th: Establish a music publishing and upload all your songs

With these strategies you can be sure that after 5 years, you now have a full functioning catalog with all supporting documentation plus a website you could promote your songs. You are now ready to accept a client!

You have written a piece of music with lyrics. Now what? You have difficulty in arranging the songs and it’s normal. Below are the tips I would like to share to minimize difficulties in arranging songs. These are the best ways to put a song together.

You must be familiar with different song arrangements style typically, it looks like the one below:

1. Start the song with Intro – if you are a singer-songwriter, you can start with a simple guitar strumming of your preferred song chord progression.

2. 1st stanza – using Intro chord progression, if Intro sequence is G-Em-C-D, then 1st stanza should have the same beat and progression as this.

3. 2nd stanza -still using the same chord progression and set of melodies as the 1st stanza but with DIFFERENT lyrics this time.

4. Chorus -using new chord progression called as the “Chorus chord progression”, but depending on songwriter creativity he/she may still use the stanza chords but with a different set of melodies already for the same chord progression. Chorus chords are characterized by being more lively, catchy and should produce the most memorable parts of the song called as “hook”.

5. 3rd stanza- it will now use again the stanza chord progressions, same one used with 1st and 2nd stanza. Make sure the lyrics will be different from the one used in 1st and 2nd stanza.

6. 4th stanza- the last stanza of the song, will be using same chord progressions as 1st, 2nd and 3rd stanza. Again the lyrics for this one should not be the same as those previous stanzas.

7. Bridge (optional)- this will be using a chord progression that is entirely different from stanza and chorus progressions, as the purpose of bridge is to capture more of listeners attention to the song by drastically changing the melodies of the song using different chord progressions. Most songs do not bridge, so this section of the song is optional.

8. Chorus or Ending- it will go back again to the chorus to emphasize the hook of the song. This will ensure that as the listeners finished hearing the song, it will have a higher chance of remembering the song and a useful way to popularize or marketing of the song. Memorable songs do earn a lot of royalties, because in the first place, people are playing it because they remember it. And they like it because they know it well by remembering the song.

Once you get to know those components or section that make up the song, it is the time to write down some songwriting tips:

First thing to do: Construct the basic chord sequence of the song by defining the Key of the song. This will be the basis for all the chord progressions in your intro, stanza and in your chorus. Strum it and give it a beat, this will be your INTRO. Popular chord progressions could be like C-Am-F-G or D-A-Bm-G. Mostly intro can be done with your own style using acoustic guitar or a piano.

Second thing to do: You have to make sure you have written a great 1st stanza melodies with lyrics. Write it down and do not forget to record it with your cassette. Practice it several times and when you get to know it…

Make sure you are equipped at least: a writing pad to write lyrics, a guitar or any instrument and a cassette recorder if you are really serious of crafting your songs.

Third thing to do: Spend the whole day or week creating the best hook of the song. It is worth your time. After all, the song hook is what makes the song remembered and you should avoid writing songs which are not memorable. Spend more time developing it and make sure it is highly marketable and competitive. Make sure the transition from stanza to chorus is smooth, harmonic and catchy. Do not do weird creative things, it will not sell. Do not do things such as changing the key of the song from stanza to chorus, except you are 100% sure, it is nicely done.

You have done the foundations, remember you only have two formulate two sets of melodies: one for the stanza (which will be the same melodies to be used throughout the 2nd, 3rd and 4th stanza) and the other for the chorus. Once the foundation is complete, it is now the time to write lyrics that will exactly fit those melodies. Write marketable lyrics that will touch people lives. It will last and get noticed I am sure.

Remember that the most important part of the song is the hook, you can watch this video to get some live tips on how to write the hook of the song:
