Songwriters often dream of having a good and decent recording studio. Nowadays, it starts to become a known trend of musicians starting their own home recording studio or becoming a home studio producer or mixer on their own, for the following reasons:

a. Commercial studios are very expensive and they need to cut production cost by starting on their own.
b. They like to earn some music production skills.
c. They have all the freedom they want with their music (as opposed to commercial studios where there are producers controlling your music).
d. No hassles and pressures in the home studio, you can work anytime you need.

I have mention some of the important aspects already specially on how to succeed with your own songwriting demo. Not all home recording studio aims to produce a demo, some will even use it for actual and commercial music production.

So how do we start?

Below are the best advices I can give , based on years and years of experience producing songs at home:

1. It starts with knowledge. I do not recommend to buy any equipment unless you are fully sure how to use it. Read first, understand then buy the basic sets of equipment you need first. Below are the topics I will recommend to gain knowledge pertaining to the audio recording aspect (by order of priority):

a. Understand the purpose of a sound card.
b. Understand the flow of signals from your instruments all the way down to your computer.
c. Learn how to use the mixer (very basic not a console like this!)

You can have something like a simple Behringer Xenyx 502 which is not big and expensive.

d. Get a recording software and understand how to use it. I recommend Adobe audition, Cakewalk and Sony Vegas (all are Windows based, Pro Tools is nice but could be expensive, since it is industry standard). Start learning first with basic loops provided by the software package. Do not ever switch to any music production software once you learn how to use it.. Stick with it, your mastery in using your software can be one of the major key factors of becoming a pro in music production for the future.

e. Learn what is compression, equalization, normalizing, noise reduction, clipping and other technical aspects of recording. I recommend reading my computer audio recording blog as it contains very important details on how to effectively use these recording techniques.

2. Prepare to produce crappy recordings and learn from it. More than 5 years experience, I believe it is a myth that your quality recordings are being hampered by your low cost equipment, no it is not. Instead what is likely the problem, is the failure of the home studio producer to accept/learn mistakes as well as failure to understand completely the technical aspect of recording (see e. above) and the proper use of the recording/mixing software. Have your song be professionally reviewed in MySpace, Broadjam, etc. Compare your work with the pro, then tweak and tweak using basic recording techniques such as compression, normalization and equalization. You will noticed as your accept mistakes, your produced song will start to hear like a professionally produced work.

3. Invest with good ears more than with a good equipment first. Take care with your ears, do not mix with loud volume always, and do mix for 3 to 4 straight hours, it makes your ears tired and incapable of producing good hearing judgment.

4. Love your completed work. Only if you have passion with your work , that someone will starts to love your work also.

A lot of artist think, how to get recording deals? Recording deals can be one of the artist biggest career achievement. When there is a recording deal:

a. Artist can own a mansion

b. The successful recording artist can fly in his/her own jets.

c. And a lot and lot of cash.

I am sorry but any recording artist thinking of this seems disillusioned of past music trend that any recording artist should be rich after getting a deal.. Now this is not true.So the question is, how to get artist recording deal? The best answer is “SIGN YOURSELF“.

How is this possible? Prove yourself you can be successful in your own way and this can be done by going to the Indie route. Set goals and achieve it. There is no quick way to get deals, the only way you can do is to love your profession, set goals and work on it.

Major labels are not signing or offering recording deals to a beginner and ordinary artist, instead they are looking for successful independent artist with a lots of fan base, songs and knowledge in music business. Why??? It is because you are an investment to them. By establishing yourself as successful indie artist that achieves glory without major label support, your are indeed a worthy investment and good value for their money. How much more if they support you with their money, you are going to be more successful isn’t it?

Do not be frustrated if you do not get recording deal. Do not ever make this as your goal, remember that if you love your profession, you can find enjoyment not only in getting deals. Instead you can set goals achievable for yourself. An example of realistic goal is the number of fans you have in your mailing list. If you write songs, recorded them and have them in CD for sale, it is very easy to be successful as an independent artist. You can contact your fans that you have CDs for sale and have them watched your live concert at any of your selected venues.

Trust me, you can find enjoyment in music if you set realistic goals. A lot of artist are down because they cannot simply get recording deals. Instead of going directly to this, set other realistic goals such as getting your songs licensed in television, film and other recording projects. You can make big bucks in this type of business if you know what you are doing, get to know the art of making money from your music, read books, read professional music blogs , learn and learn always.

You cannot be certain what will happen next in the future. But again, by letting your music exposed to anyone, you are increasing your chance of success in getting deals. If you continually play live, who knows someone watching has the power to recommend you to play a bigger venue and gets some deals. Also if you exposed your music in the internet, you knows that some big shot music executive stumble upon your song and likes it. These things can happen.

Always play live and expose your songs. People reactions, comments , feedback and reviews are your best measuring equipment to determine what are your chances of getting recording deals.

A famous saying in music business: “Instead of asking how to get artist recording deal, better ask how you can earn a living as a musician”? A sincere answer to this thought provoking question can mean success in your career.

Reverb (technical term: reverberation) is the most noticeable feature in past recordings, particularly the 1970’s, 80’s and some of the early 90’s. We used in hearing reverb in the old radio and of course in our favorite songs. If you are songwriter wanting to make a trendy demo, do you really need reverb in your recording today?

Reverb is the spacious nature of sound, when we say more “reverb” , it means more echo like; though echo is not reverb in strict sound engineering terms. Reverb occurs when sound waves reflect creating space and delay. Much like when you talk loud inside a church sounds very different when you talk inside your well carpeted tight room. The reason is that sound waves tend to vibrate and reflect very easily in wide marble floored church while sound waves are absorb highly in a carpeted material preventing to reflect. Wide space creates an echoey nature of sound, it is what reverb in sound recordings will sound also.

Below are the most memorable reverb laced recordings in the past:

1. Album “Playdeep” by Outfield — I really like this album,I still have a CD on this and I can say they are more like playing in a football field because of wide reverb vocals and drum effects. Try to hear their song, “Your Love” and you those vocals have heavy reverb effects.

2. Album “Music Box” by Mariah Carey — Wow,sweet songs in the past always mixed with a lot of reverb particularly in vocals. Great songs in this album including “Hero” and “Without you” are mixed with heavily reverb Maria Carey vocals.

Now it is 2008. It has been over 10 years since those albums were released. Now are they still popular techniques? No. But I do not say completely zero reverb, say you are only using 10% reverb and 90% dry.

Reasons why you should not overly using reverb in your recording.

a. Today, recordings are released almost dry like a “desert”, it make sense to keep with the trend or else you music sounds 80’s and sound outdated.

b. If you are doing your own recording, having too much reverb can make your recording sound mud and thin. The primary reason is that reverb can make a poor mix sound worse because of extreme bouncing of sounds in conflicted audio spectrum. It makes those instruments fight with each other in a pool of mud:

Tips when you “REALLY NEED” reverb in your recording:

1. In some cases , you should have. A pop song diva should need reverb to stress those very high notes and make it sound captivating. One of the highly effective techniques that I use is to SELECT only portion of the vocals that needs reverb, not all of them. This should work as it will sound great!

2. Enough space is enough. Use less than 1000 ms reverb or 300 ms on drums and guitars. Guitars will sound fine at around 1000 ms reverb. Reverberation is measured in ms, this is the decay time, the time it takes for a sound to air before it will be completely gone or absorbed. High reverb has high reverberation times. Enough space is much appreciated, having a low amount ensure that you have realistic venue. Much more like a live venue, where people get tight and you can seldom hear reverberation.

One last piece of advice:

1. A mix will sound great even without reverb and completely dry. So to impress someone with your demo recordings, make it sound nice by not using reverb.

2. Performance is even more important than sound effects, having those reverberation can sound fake. Realistic in your face sound is much more appreciated. Do you know why American Idol contestants are auditioned without a microphone and just facing into the judge? It is because they want to hear your real performance ability in a completely dry scenario. Reverberation can fake vocals and instruments. But if properly used, it can make recordings sound great.

Description: Sound effects cd, sound fx cd, high definition sound fx, surround sfx, surround sound effects, download sfx, high definition sound effects offered by Sound Effects Shop, the premier site for professional sound effects.Do not write outdated lyrics that falls outside of a music trend. It is very annoying to listen to a song with outdated lyrics. For example, it is common in the 1980’s to have lyrics about drugs, bicycles with hot chicks riding it. Other typical example is 1990’s, when gangs are so common and lyrics on those times focuses on troubled teens and rebellion. Now it is not, it will just make your song marketability very low and annoys listeners.

The main problem with writing lyrics is emotions and songwriter experience. Although I agree that when a songwriter writes based on his experience and emotions it will produce great results. It is not the case with writing lyrics to fit a certain trend, songwriter should consider what is really happening these days and also consider what is something “universal”. Writing songs with universal appeal makes your song more marketable and appealing to the current public.

So today what are the ways to make your lyrics marketable? I will outline below based on what I think will help:

1. Write a lyrics that appeals universal to the public. You could write a song about someone. It could be your dog, about a certain animal, about your girlfriend, about your cars, etc. This type of song can withstand the test of time and will not appear outdated in the long run.

2. Write a lyrics that describes a certain universal feeling. Again this type of approach is good since it will stand the test of time. “LOVE” is a universal feeling that makes it so good to write a song about it. Take for example the lyrics from the Beatles song “And I Love Her”, it is very well applicable until today.

3. Focus on lyrics that most people complained always, it creates controversy and makes your song famous. You could write a song entitled “Debt in your credit card”, it may sound funny but the lyrics could touch peoples lives.

4. Write a lyrics that describes the feeling of any certain and important moments of a human being. A good example of these are the following:

a. Birthday
b. Baptism
c. Religion
d. Wedding
e. Death
f. Graduation
g. Debut

The most marketable I think is a song about weddings. Lots of couples like to give away CD’s during their weddings and having a wedding song is an advantage of any songwriter. Remember that a wedding song can either be played during the wedding ceremony, be compiled in the CD and be played in the reception. Take note these are big financial opportunities to grab both performance and mechanical royalties.

5. Lyrics according to occasions and seasons will stand the test of time also. Example of these very important seasons are Christmas, Lent, Summer, Spring, Autumn, Rainy season and Winter.

As a summary, write lyrics that creates meaning and has purpose to be listen to. If you can get a clear message across to the listeners, then it will make the song more important for them and will be remembered always.

You might ask, if there is a way to succeed in vocals these days. Being a vocalist equates to being a star, voice is the most important instrument in the band and in the song (not to offend guitarist , bassist and drummers but vocalist is what people needs to hear playing live) . It is why American Idol is popular. I have seen auditions in American Idol, you can easily spot a big potential versus a crap singer. Frankly I am not a singer either but I produced songs seriously both in live and in studio. I can determine clearly the best way to sing in major types of genre such as pop, rock and country.

Actually in my experience these days you need:

a. A good voice quality
b. You sound like those successful artist today
c. You need confidence
d. You need an incredible stage performance
e. Emotions (yes it is!)

If you have a and b only, and you feel you lack the confidence to sing. You need a vocal coach. If you cannot afford there are a lot of materials in the internet that offer vocal coaching to help you become a singer nowadays. Keep following that blog, I am sure it will help a lot. It is my wife new vocal training blog, do not worry she sings professionally and lots of experience to share.

Also one of the things that prevent someone to become successful in singing is the LACK OF LIVE PERFORMANCE. Performing well on live makes you a legend. It is because fans can see you, feel your emotions and hear your voice and connect you personally. It is why Bono of U2 is tremendously successful in singing. He sings very well on stage.

My advice is to start early practice, if you have web cam try to sing in front of it acapella. And try to criticize yourself against standards If you are confused of what are the standards, then:

a. Try to cover your song for which you feel very confident to perform, video tape it and upload that one to YouTube.

Tips: To do this, you should have a web cam, a background minus one of your song to be captured by the web cam microphone and a video recording software. Most of the high quality web cams already include a video capturing software that will be used for recording. Make a rough balance of the mix, make sure the volume levels of the microphone and your vocal is balance. Adjust or lower than the background vocals if you think it is drowning your voice.

b. There are a lot of ways you can get exposure and to know if you are meeting vocal standards or not, try to reply the video to a minus one version.
c. Enable commenting of the song so that anyone watching your video will be able to comment.
d. Whoa! When there are comments, respond professionally when there are someone criticizing your performance. It is essential for you to improve.
e. If there are positive comments, thank them and you can ask them why they like it. But most of the time, they will mention it in their comments.
f. If there are negative comments, thank them also and learn from it. Discuss using comments feature in You tube, there will be many viewers that will learn from the discussion and will appreciate your video and contribution to the Youtube Community.

Professional advice: Start a band with you on vocals or Join a Singing Contest !

Yes you can! This will gives you opportunity to apply what you have learned in practice. Also this gives you confidence to perform in front of people and starting to build that fan base. If your genre does not give too much opportunity for finding suitable band members, you can join a singing contest. They are everywhere in your locality.

Who knows many months from now, you will be the next Idol.

Help Us in the Campaign Against Music Piracy.

There is a big change in selling music today. Before, all we could do is go to our favorite store and buy the albums of the artist we love. Now it is different, music is easily accessible everywhere. We can find a lot of music in the internet. This is an advantage for both music consumers and recording artist. It is because music consumers can find music in the internet which is very easy to do. In the side of the recording artist, any indie can sell songs for downloads and can easily promote songs than before.

However there is a big problem with selling and marketing music today and it is piracy and unauthorized use of recording medium. This is really affecting how the music industry earns. I feel bad music is easy to exploit in the internet, I am a music creator myself and I need to fully protect my ownership. Music consumers and listeners should understand that songs are forms of properties and such commercial usage means compensation for the use of such rights unless it is clearly waived by the songwriter.

Songwriting is a form of profession which we earn money from songs, professional songwriters’ changes peoples lives and inspire them. In return they get income in the form of royalties and license payments for the use of songs. A song and an iPod is no different, you buy an iPod for yourself to be entertained. So, the same with the songs you are loading with it, you have to pay for it also.

If you are Steve Jobs, and you heard someone is replicating illegally the iPod, how do you feel? It is the same feeling of the songwriter, when he/she knows that someone is illegally replicating the songs without proper compensation.

So how can you help the songwriters in the campaign against Music Piracy???

The easiest thing is to report music piracy online. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is very active in preventing music piracy. Actually, in good faith, it is normal to download songs for your own personal use and you should not share it with others or it will become a piracy. Also I can hardly believe why some countries particularly Philippines is very slow (or almost show no resistance at all!), in arresting pirated products.

If you visit Philippines especially in the major cities, you will see stores selling pirated products of artist songs in urban areas and even very near to Government City Halls and Police stations! I have a friend in Canada and US and this is not the case. I strongly believe this only happen in the Philippines.

I hope someone in RIAA will paid a visit to Philippines and you will surprise millions of pirated audio CDs are being sold almost everywhere in the country’s major cities. This cost millions to music industry business.

In the case of the internet, there are many file sharing sites and downloading sites I have seen. I know it is very hard to detect but it worth reporting to RIAA for examination of these type of sites. I do not know if these sites have legal licenses to operate. I strongly recommend that if a site offers some free downloading without a license you will report it immediately to RIAA, so that they can take a look at it whether it is operating with proper business license and copyrights.

What are my recommendations to solve music piracy?

I would like to contribute realistic solutions to the music industry which could prevent music piracy problems:

1. Encourage awards to people reporting music piracy websites and store locations. This is the same case when pursuing hard hitting and hiding criminals, there is always an award for someone reporting the hideout location. Think of Al-Qaeda terrorist, someone that will report the hideout will get something in return ($$$). Piracy is a crime.

2. If advance in music and digital technology makes piracy very easy, then make use of the technology to beat it also. One of the pitfalls in digital music revolution is the birth of Compact disc (CD) and MP3, we are praised with this invention. It is so easy to play, shuffle and select songs using a CD player. The quality of the digital audio is superb such as MP3. But this revolution is a nightmare to many music entrepreneurs, with some hideous criminals easily setup CD replication plants to illegally manufacture audio CD or burn MP3 without proper authorization and sell those MP3’s.

I am thinking of having a unique code embedded in the sound wave of original recordings, and when a song streams or being downloaded in the internet, it will send packets of signal to a master server where all copyrighted sound recordings are in placed with corresponding unique code. Then a song publisher or recording label can then add a complete authorized users of the song. Any illegal streaming or downloading sites can then be traced, caught and arrested if they cannot present a license.

What is needed:
a. A technology to embed unique code in the sound wave of final master recordings done by a producer. So any recording producer should have this type of technology and embed code into the sound wave to protect the master recording. This software should be open source and I challenge all open source developers to work on this. This embedded unique code will not change in any change of format (like MP3, WMA, etc). How good this type of software development is measured in how hard or how impossible it is to crack.

b. A master web server which handles the database of all of master recording unique codes submitted by all producers or sound recording owners. This master server should be able to receive all transmissions from a player that is capable of sending packets to the server. The job of this server is to get the data of those unique codes and compare that with the database. The database will then give information of the legal users of the song. This identification could be a form of licensing number used during the licensing process. The licensing number uniquely identifies a certain user based on the terms of the music license. So during music licensing the owner and the user agrees where the music will be used, this includes websites where it will be published for use. If any mismatch occur, it is a red flag of piracy and will send an email to the copyright holder. The copyright holder can then gather those facts reported by the server and gather enough evidence to file copyright infringement cases. To protect both songwriters and owners of sound recordings. A single song written by a certain songwriter x should only associated with a single/unique code in the sound wave. The songwriter information is included during registrations in the master web server for monitoring. Any duplicated cases requires licensing from music publisher and should be detected during web server song registrations. Any submissions should be cleared first for piracy before being added to the system.

c.A player like some sort of flash plug in or flash web page media player but this is capable of sending packets containing those unique codes to the master server. This player should be industry web standard and any old versions of player will not play if the audio (any form whether MP3, WMA, others) contains the embedded unique code. This is very easy to do.

Remember the song “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin? This song was released in 1970’s and the length of song intro is around 50 seconds. It was a very wonderful song with good melody, instrumentation and meaning. It was one of the most favorite rock songs ever written. The song intro is amazing, the acoustic guitar sounds so classical, unique and peaceful. But that was yesterday. Today, creating long intro puts you in trouble. Why?

It is because it is getting harder to sell a song in the radio and everywhere. The biggest selling point of any song today is the hook and lyrics and not anymore so much of musical instrumentation. It is getting harder because radio is cutting off playing minutes for songs and to save more time in advertisements. Advertisements is getting more in demand due to increasing market competition anywhere. Therefore if you’re a songwriter that is fun of making long song intro, you’re song intro will be either be:

a. Not accepted for commercial recording and release because of too much instrumentation.
b. Will be accepted but the song intro will be truncated.

I have heard rumors that commercial radio is increasing the song tempo to shorten the number of minutes of playing time. This receives a lot of negative feedback from recording labels that there songs are not of full potential when being promoted in the air. You will not notice it when you hear it, but increasing the song tempo by a fraction can save a lot of minutes in the 24 hours FM operation. This minutes save will be used for advertisements which is the number one source of income for commercial radio.

As a producer I kept the intro short, typically within 10 to 20 seconds. Even 20 seconds seems to long today. Some songwriters implement great strategies to sell the song right away to any listers but structuring the song very well. This includes:

a. Keeping the intro very short (not more than 20 seconds)
b. Chorus or hook is played right away, enabling everyone to pickup attention.

Also this problem of creating long intro is affecting pop music too much more than any genre. It is ok to create long intro in jazz and it seems normal. The reason is that Jazz songs focuses more on instrumentation more than the singer image. It is exactly different in pop music. You need to impress listeners right away because of too much competition everywhere. Not only listeners but to enable radio station to accept your song. It seems that they hate accepting songs with long intro, they get bored very easily.

Musically of any song is less important today than it was yesterday, in the 70’s and 80’s where this was given tremendous importance. The instruments and melodies of the song before is the top priority of accepting any kind of demo. And creating very long song instrumentation intro is normal like “Hotel California” by Eagles. Now things are exactly different, there is such thing as “Image” hurting the artistic musically of any song. Music video is more of image, but I am conservative musician. As long as the intro is short and the song is good, I do not care with the artist whether attractive or not.

The song itself is what makes it more important than everything, who cares how many artist already sings “Happy Birthday” or “Yesterday” by Beatles. There are mixtures of ugly and attractive singers. I know that. But the song last for a long time, it is because of craftsmanship and great meaning. This is a good objective of any songwriting endeavor.

Also, the fault of a song with very long intro is not exactly the songwriter but the producer of the song. The job of the producer is to translate raw songwriting into professional recording. And in the professional recording process this is where the intro is created. This type of producer lost track in time. But pop music producers knows this very well and they know also that with songs that have intro of more than 20 seconds results to less commercial potential of the song.

This article is a warning to any songwriter doing their own demo at home. Careful when creating intro, make it short and simple. After all the one you would like to sell is not your intro but the song hook, melody and lyrics. Keep this in your mind always. A lot of songwriter also who at the same time are good guitarist falls into the trap of creating Van Halen type of intro today. Do not spend so much time with your guitar amp creating song intro, instead spend more time with your cassette recorder and create great song melodies and lyrics.Modern listeners do not anymore like to listen very long song intro.

This is my own analysis of music trend between the year 2000 and 2008. In my previous post about pop music trend, I will make this in detail now covering the most important aspects of music business. This trend may change but for the solid 8 years, I still have not detect major changes in trend.

I am listening to radio and I noticed that music today is getting more dry to hear. This trend has not changed since the start of 2000. Music hits its loudest in starting those years and most of the CD released were so loud compared to the previous years (in the 80’s and 90’s).

So if you are an aspiring singer/songwriter, get to know the current trends of music or else you are lost behind.

I can give my comment in commercial music different aspect in terms of:
a. Music (songwriting style)
b. Album production, the sound
c. Image
d. Promotion.

Music (songwriting style)

Year 2000 and beyond Songwriting became simpler, lyrics are not very long and direct to the point. Most the lyrics are about friends and love. The songwriting is creatively crafted and deviates from the normal procedure. This is very important in this time of heavy music competition. Most songwriters are not as skilled as before but I could say more creative. There a lot of music lovers who are not serious musicians but can craft song very well because of creativity and listening experience. This is also the period where “hook” of the song is extremely important. Hook of the song is the most memorable part of the song, and decision makers in the industry should able to capture and remember it in the first 1:30 of your song or else they listen to another demo CD.

Album production, the sound

Year 2000 music and beyond- this is the present time, where you can hear very loud CD’s typically in the pop and rock. Also reverb is almost not used anymore and just used to add some very little presence. This is the time where the vocalist is primarily important and solo artist is very useful compared to bands. There are several reasons for this, the music industry experiences a crises on piracy and illegal downloading. To maximize profit, music labels should cut recording cost and artist related fees. It could explain why the recording production is straight forward (no effects such as reverbs or any other studio effects present in the 80’s and 90’s) to save recording time. Also it could explain why solo artist is very important, because there are always misunderstanding with bands due to lack of funding, support and understanding of the music business.

Image

Year 2000 and beyond- Just be yourself and stick to the current dress trend. I can say because the way artist dress by now looks like an ordinary but fashionable person. Unlike the 80’s where you can easily distinguish the difference between a fan and their artist (where artist has lots of tattoo and some weird fashion). Today, it is difficult. The artist dress like a fan. The reason for this is to increase publicity and to make artist more approachable to their fans which is a current factor of merchandising and CD sales. Typical popular artist are Avril Lavige, Gwen Estefani and Kelly Clarkson.

This image is licensed under Creative Commons , Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 License

Promotion

Year 2000 and beyond- Music hits its lowest peak in promotion since then. It is because promotion is getting harder for independent artist to make break in the music business. Commercial FM radio does not support independent artist. What is popular is self-ruthless promotion of independent artist using INTERNET. Internet became the way for indie artist to get exposure as well doing live concerts. They earn royalty income from music publishing, selling songs online, selling CD in CDbaby.com and many more. The pirated CD is very popular hurting CD sales and everything especially in Asian countries. The artist remain solid in music downloads for both sign and unsigned artist. Music download networks such as i-tunes and others became one of the best ways for songwriter to earn income. Music piracy is still not resolved which I hope should be.

So the best advice for any songwriter, get to know your trend to be more marketable in your music business.

I am an avid fan of today’s latest music trend in pop (2007-2008). There are great artist today delivering great music such as Kelly Clarkson, Fergie, Colbie Caillat, and Norah Jones.

Norah Jones Live:

Kelly Clarkson Live:

I can say they are great for this year music trend especially for female pop music artist. So if you are a female singer/songwriter make sure your music fits the current trend.

What about the bands?? In the early 2000, super great bands like Matchbox 20, Green day, Vertical Horizon and Goo Goo dolls sound still share a great sound and influence in the market.

Matchbox 20:

I really love those music, in fact I am at their age and you can expect me to like them also. How about the old trend? Beatles music? Led Zep music? Still not fade but a derivative of their sound can create a trend. Like what Guns n Roses and Def Leppard became after influencing Deep purple and 70’s rock.

We all love music, but being a songwriter needs to stick the trend to be marketable. It is maybe hard if it wont fit your style. But very important if you want to promote your music today.

Consider these following situations:

1. Say you write a song.
2. And want to record the song by working with a producer….

This is the first stage of your problem, because the recording producer is the overall in-charge of the recording process and quality of the album. For sure, recording producer can make a hit but he has to make it marketable too so that it can be played in radio.

Your songs cannot really impressed modern producers.

3. You may produce on your own but still you target market is very limited. Some writers are producers also and they can record on their own. When you sell your CD on CD baby you really have to hit the target market very specific to your songs or else there is no market or sale.

In the gigs, you are limited to the clubs that will play to that type of niche.

4. Love music and be your self. Business makes music confusing. It is because it is an art. If you really love that, and you do not care for money and it still made you happy, stick to it. You are more luckier than those signed artists being forced to do what they wont like.
