Guitar Amplifiers 101

The beauty of playing an acoustic or electric guitar is made more interesting with the advent of the electronic guitar amplifier. Guitar amplifiers are fashioned to enable guitars to produce louder signals and to allow guitarists to change the frequency and effects of the sound. Guitar amplifiers are configured in two ways—the standalone amplifier or amp head which does not have a speaker and the combination amplifier which includes an amplifier head and guitar speakers built in a wooden box.

Guitar amplifiers come in many variations and uses, depending on the style of music the guitarist engages with. The most common type is called the traditional guitar amplifier which creates a clean and warm sound. The traditional amp is preferred mostly by indie and alternative bands, as well as with blues and country artists. The hard rock-style amp is more complex as it includes more tone filters, distorted sound effects, and pre-amplification regulation buttons. Bass amplifiers are mainly made for bass guitars and are characterised by extended tone control and response. Keyboard amps also have extended response and very low distortion. Similarly, an acoustic amplifier functions like the keyboard amp except that it is built for clean and transparent sound production marked with less electronically modified notes. With the overview of the different types of amplifiers stated above, you now have the idea of what kind of amplifier to purchase and utilise for you to produce the desired sound and effects you want your guitar to embody.
